Introduction:
The aim of this workshop is to explore diversity in the workplace, focusing on the complexities of difference which can initiate team and individual change, within the responsibilities imposed on employees and managers by the law.

Course content:
- The business case for diversity
- The elements which comprise an inclusive environment and who can make it happen
- The need to recognise how others may perceive you and how you can reinforce or change these perceptions
- What helps and hinders inclusion and exclusion
- How our own stereotype, biases and assumptions affect our behaviour and relationship with others.
- Current anti-discrimination legislation and how it impacts on the workplace - an overview of legal content in an equal opportunities framework
- Consequences of ignoring equal opportunities
- Look at tools and skills which initiate change such as active listening and open-closed question
- Action plan on how we can engage with diversity, including how to identify and challenge discriminatory practice, and encouraging diversity by use of effective monitoring procedures
- The difference between positive action and positive discrimination
- Avoiding bullying and harassment - what constitutes harassment? - investigating bullying, racial, sexual and other forms of harassment
- Managing differences - respecting differences - encouraging diversity
- Developing policies and procedures - carrying out a diversity audit - developing good practice guides for managers
Course outcomes:
By the end of this course, delegates will be able to:
- understand the key legal principles which impact on diversity in the workplace
- know when to seek professional HR advice, prior to matters becoming litigious
